In this Sleepy Scriptures One-Year Bible episode, we read the complete books of Habakkuk, Zephaniah, and Haggai, followed by chapters 1 through 7 of Zechariah from the King James Version.
Habakkuk begins with difficult questions about violence, injustice, and the apparent silence of God. The Lord calls the prophet to wait in faith: “the just shall live by his faith.” By the close of the book, Habakkuk can rejoice in God even when the fig tree does not blossom and the fields produce no food.
Zephaniah warns of the coming day of the Lord, while calling the humble to seek righteousness and meekness. His prophecy ends with a beautiful picture of restoration—the Lord rejoicing over His people with joy and resting in His love.
Haggai then speaks to the returned exiles in Jerusalem, urging them to rebuild the temple and reminding them repeatedly that God is with them.
In Zechariah chapters 1 through 7, the Lord calls His people to return to Him and gives the prophet a series of remarkable night visions: horsemen among the myrtle trees, horns and craftsmen, a man with a measuring line, Joshua the high priest clothed in clean garments, a golden candlestick and olive trees, a flying roll, and a woman carried away in an ephah. Through these visions come promises of cleansing, restoration, the coming Branch, and the work of God accomplished “not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit.”
Settle in with gentle narration, soothing music, and peaceful visuals as these prophetic books lead us through questioning, faith, repentance, rebuilding, cleansing, divine presence, and hope.
